Auriant began when award-winning Colchester singer-songwriter Kaomi Taylor met French-Canadian multi-instrumentalist Denis Thibouthot of Barre. United by a passion for dramatic melodies and unusual rhythms and chords, the two began repertoire-building in 2019 and debuted in fall 2021. Since then, they've gained followers and acclaim by word of mouth for their jazzy, folky pop and soft rock covers ranging from Sting to Damian Rice and Joni Mitchell to Norah Jones.
Denis sings and plays acoustic, nylon, and resonator guitar and acoustic and electric cello. Originally from Drummondville QC, Denis has played string and wind instruments in well-known bands from south Florida to Quebec. Some dozen years ago, he challenged himself to take up cello and has since performed as a cellist with the Vermont Philharmonic Orchestra. His most treasured musical memory? Recording John Mayer's Daughters to surprise his daugher Chloe for father-daughter dance at her 2022 wedding.
Kaomi is a mezzo-soprano who plays keyboard and acoustic guitar. She most recently performed solo as a singer-songwriter using the name Kaomi Kingsley and had an original song place in the Smoky Mountains Festival Songwriting Competition. A Vermonter since college days with the Middlebury College Choir and the Middebury Madrigals, she has performed in local groups including Sugar Moon and Root 7, in Boston's 2000 Masters, and has appeared on and behind stage with Lyric Theatre. A musical high point? Corresponding with "Time to Say Goodbye" composer Francesco Sartori, who wrote to compliment her homespun arrangement of the song.
